Poetry & Photography
I have been very interested in both poetry and photography over many years, and for me they seem to combine naturally together.
Poetry and photography have a similar challenge: how to capture the essence of a story, idea or experience using the briefest of methods.
Here are a couple of my favourite related quotes which sum this up quite well.
The first one is from the author and actor Stephen Fry on the subject of poetry. Taken from his book ‘The Ode Less Travelled: Unlocking the Poet Within’:
“Poems are not meant to be read like novels. There is much pleasure to be had in taking the same fourteen-line sonnet to bed with you and reading it many times over a week. Savour, taste, enjoy.
Poetry is not meant to be sucked up like a child’s milkshake, it is much better sipped like a precious malt whiskey.
Verse is one of our last stands against the instant and the infantile. Even when it is simple and childlike it is to be savoured.”
And the second quote is from ‘Afterword’ by Vincent Versace:
“The best photographers are the ones who do not take photographs, but have learned how to let photographs take them. They allow themselves to be moved, and that movement writes the visual poem that is their photograph.”
